History

1946
The Lycée français de Vienne (LFV) was founded by General Béthouart, High Commissioner of the French Republic in Austria, on 11 May 1946 in temporary premises.
Since its foundation, the LFV has been open to girls and boys, Austrians and French. It offered the unique feature of all-day classes and, at a time of widespread food shortages, included a school canteen.

1947
In occupied Vienna, the first Cultural Agreement between the Republic of Austria and the French Republic was signed on 15 March 1947.
This defines the special status of the LFV. This gives it a lasting legal basis for its operation and the approval of its studies.

1952
An agreement dated 22 February 1952 ‘relating to the Lycée Français de Vienne’ defined the equivalences, particularly between the Matura and the Baccalauréat, and the respective proportions of Austrian and French education. This version was updated on several occasions (1960, 1962, 1968) and abrogated by the current agreement dated 27 January 1983, which maintains the main thrust of the initial text.

1954
LFV moved into its current premises on 8 May 1954, which were located in the grounds of the Palais Clam-Gallas.

‘Wie die Jungen sungen…’ (If all the children in the world…) is a promotional film for the Lycée Français de Vienne, directed in 1954 by Georg Tressler. The film depicts the integration of two new pupils, an Austrian and a Hungarian, and illustrates the strong diversity that makes up the school and the way in which pupils of different nationalities get to know each other thanks to the French language.
The film was produced in 1954, at the start of the Cold War, by the United States Information Agency, founded the previous year to promote American foreign policy and international cultural exchanges.
