AEFE & BILDUNGSDIREKTION

AEFE, a french ambition

Founded in 1990, the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) embodies France’s ambition to maintain a world-class educational network around the globe. Operating under the supervision of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, it fulfills an essential mission for French families living abroad while promoting the French language and culture worldwide.

This unique network now includes 600 accredited institutions in 140 countries, providing continuous education—from preschool to the baccalaureate—to over 400,000 students, in full compliance with the French national curriculum. Rooted in strong humanist values—tolerance, equality, critical thinking, and openness—it serves as a true multicultural melting pot where students learn not only from academic knowledge but also from one another.

Student success is outstanding: with an average baccalaureate pass rate of 96.7%—often reaching 100% in many schools—the French schools abroad prepare their graduates to access the best higher education opportunities in France and internationally.

At the heart of this model, multilingualism and intercultural dialogue play a central role. With nearly 70% of students coming from foreign backgrounds, they thrive in an open, global environment that fosters personal growth and intercultural understanding.
Thus, the AEFE network builds lasting connections between countries and actively contributes to France’s global influence.

Finally, within this prestigious network, the directly managed schools—including the Lycée français de Vienne—fully embody the excellence and commitment of the French public education system abroad.
